I am afraid this tutorial is out of date and it should be removed. I spent three days trying to make it work on Flex 4 ... with no avail. I am sure it worked well for earlier versions or someone with enough knowledge can make it work. But again, this is for newbies like me, the guys who know better .... they look elsewhere.
Or if Mr. Neri can update the scripts would be great.

Nice start for me thanks, but my prob is...

at my localhost, all are perfect as in all... but then I transfered the files from the output folder to my shared web hosting account which has the same features as mine... Is there something to modify in the files or what? I have no idea coz I can't login the accounts and there's no even alert box popping up for invalid accounts.

I run the login.php file and no mysql errors or something different, it outputs the value of the $output variable which is of course 'no' so I don't know if there's something blocking the way (the files) or server problem?

Any help guys? oh and btw I'm new to flex and still learning PHP :D

Ok took me 2 days to install everything: apache webserver, mysql, php, and follow this tutorial to the end.

I have a working DB with example data, and the connection is good. When I run the login.php file alone in my browser it gives me the NO for a succesfull login.

I think something is wrong with the submit button. I suspect it doesnt activate the login file? I did put in the onclick text... but it doesnt give me an error, and I dont know why. Anybody suggestions why I cant get it to work?

I have a problem though in that I have changed it slightly to include an @ in front of the mysql_connect and added in a conversion of the password using the SHA1 function. However when I try to enter the credentials I get a 2032 Stream error using URL http://localhost/login.php. I have included header changes in the login.php as follows;
header('Pragma: bogus');
header('Cache-control: bogus');

but I still get the error. Very new to flex and PHP so I am not sure how this is not working. Webserver is Apache 2. Hopefully you might be able to shed some light on the subject.

Great tutorial, I have it implemented, and working fine. But I am curious as to how you would pass a userid variable from one state to another. Like in straight PHP you can set a SESSION_ID which will allow you pass a few variables from page to page.

I would like to pull to a datagrid/mysql on the "Logged In" state, that is assosciated with the user

ie: SELECT * FROM users WHERE userid = $_POST['userid'];

or something similar. I am at a loss as to how to pass this variable from the base state to the logged in state.

is it possible to run the application from my desktop (mac) and put the HTTPService url on a web host server that has PHPmyAdmin (with mysql) on it.

I followed the tutorial of gotoandlearn.com (thanks Marty), and used your PHP file, though for some reason, I think everything is working fine except the fact that when I click the php file I get an error, which you can find at http://yozef.quotaless.com/login.php
error: [code=SERVER_RESPONSE_CLOSE]

Maybe it's from the server, I put the php file in the root, and I suppose I left:
define( "DATABASE_SERVER", "localhost" );

Since completing the tutorial as shown i have set up an apache server to act as my local host for testing purposes. I have also created the database called 'flex' with a table called users with fields: username, password and loginsuccess.

I have put sample data into the database.

The database and login.php are sat on the server in the same location and my http service url is pointing at the server.

When i run the app i get the following error:

any ideas...please help, i am a complete noob to all of this and trying to make sense of it all...

If you understood any of that, im just confused as to how I link up the login.php to my database? I'm using cPanel 11 and have the following software for Databases-

MySQLDatabases, MySQLDatabaseWizard, PHPMyAdmin, RemoteSQL, PostgreSQLDatabases, PostgreSQLDatabaseWizard and PHPPgAdmin.

Could you tell me how to link 'login.php' to a database, and how to actually create a database.

Or you could dispatch an event or something...

Hi, I have packaged the login into its own component and want the login to change the main applications currentState but when I call currentState it says it cant find it. Guess its looking in the component for the state. How can I tell it to reference the parent Application?

You have to have Flex Builder 2 installed, and you place it under the "Flex Builder 2" folder which, by default, is in My Documents.

This is if you want to edit the files as a project in Flex Builder.

You then have to import the project, in Flex Builder click File->Import or something similar and then import and existing project.

Note: you might have to create the following files for it to show up as a project in Flex - ".project",".flexProperties",and "actionScriptProperties".

Notice there is nothing before the period!

I believe all the files located in the "bin" folder have to remain together, that is my understanding. It should work then, although you should check the link to your login.php script.

It seems that when I move the files out of the original directory that nothing happens when clicking the Login button. Any ideas what could be wrong?

The problem is that all RPC data service calls (RemoteObject, WebService, HTTPService) are asynchronous, meaning the code after the call does not wait for the dta to return, but continues to execute. You can never access the result of a call in the same function in which you invoke the send. You must either bind to lastREsult, or better, use a result handler function.
